Microsoft Working on a Cheaper Xbox Series X Version
According to a Twitter handle that goes by the name of TitleOS, Microsoft is working on a cheaper Xbox Series X version. This is interesting news, as it could mean that the company is planning to compete with Sony’s PlayStation 4.
TitleOS is a security researcher who shared screenshots from XDK/GDK release notes for June 2020 mentioning “Lockhart”. Now the talks are that Lockhart is going to be the cheaper and less powerful version of Xbox Series X. The notes also have “Anaconda” mentioned which is the code name for Xbox Series X.
Some reports suggest that the cheaper version of Xbox Series X apparently be called Series S or as mentioned in the notes, Lockhart will have 7.5GB of RAM and 4 teraflops of GPU performance. To give you context, Xbox Series X will have 13.5GB of usable RAM and 12 teraflops of GPU performance. The Series S will support 1080p and 1440p gaming while the Series X will support 4K.
This is going to be a direct competition for the Sony’s PS5 Digital Edition as it will be cheaper than the standard model of PS5 and the rumored price for PS5 Digital Edition could be anywhere around USD 399. The Xbox Series S will be really good as the standard Xbox Series X is expected to be around USD 550, so a cheaper version will be good. Both the Xbox Series X and PS5 are launching later this year so it will be interesting to see how the pricing goes.
Sony has announced the design for the PlayStation 5, which is set to be released in 2020. The new console will have a new design that is more akin to the Xbox One and Microsoft’s HoloLens. It will also have a digital edition that will allow users to play games and watch videos on their devices.
