I decided to rip all of my DVDs to my NAS so that I can watch them anywhere or any device.

The MPAA probably won’t sue you if you keep the DVDs to yourself, but it’s still worth noting that technically it’s illegal.

Some DVD drives have encryption protection on the drive itself, which can’t be circumvented by any kind of software. In those types of cases, you’ll need to get an older DVD drive that doesn’t have that type of built-in copyright protection.

To rip a DVD to your computer, you need two things: a program called HandBrake and an open source library for unscrambling DVDs called libdvdcss. You can find tons of other articles in Google about ripping DVDs using other programs and methods, but this method is free, uses safe, clean and malware-free software.

Step 1 – Install HandBrake

Once HandBrake is installed, we can begin to improve our video editing experience. To start, we can open up HandBrake and create a new project. Then, we can select the video format that we want to edit. We can choose to edit videos in either QuickTime or MPEG-4. We can also choose to add subtitles if desired. After making our selection, we can click on the “Edit” button and begin editing our video!

For Windows, it downloads a common x86 and x64 installer for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows and will install the appropriate version for your computer. For Macs, there is only a 64-bit version. Go ahead and install it in the default location for Windows or Mac.

The HandBrake software is a simple and easy-to-use program that can be installed on your computer without any fuss. Once it’s installed, you’ll just have to click on the “Finish” button to finish the process. After that, you’ll be able to use HandBrake to convert videos into a format that you can use on your computer. If you’re on Windows, just go ahead and click on the “Help” button and then click on “About.” You won’t need to do anything else once that’s done.

If you have the 64-bit version of HandBrake, you’ll need to follow these steps:

  1. Open HandBrake and click on the “Preferences” button.
  2. On the “General” tab, make sure that the “Use 64-bit processing” checkbox is checked.
  3. Click on the “Inputs” tab and make sure that the “Use 64-bit input files” checkbox is also checked. If you have the 32-bit version of HandBrake, you will need to follow these steps:
  4. Open HandBrake and click on the “Preferences” button.
  5. On the “General” tab, make sure that the “Use 32-bit processing” checkbox is not checked. 3. Click on the “Inputs” tab and make sure that both of the following checkboxes are unchecked: Use 32-bit input files Use 64-bit input files ..

Step 2 – Download libdvdcss

The VideoLAN company manages the open source decoding library, which you can use without installing VLC media player. Some online tutorials state that you need to install HandBrake and VLC together, but you don’t have to do that.

If you have HandBrake installed on Windows, here are the links to the appropriate versions: Windows 7: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8b3f5e3a-cfe2-4d9b-bcc7-5e4cdbcea6d1&view=ffdb5e3a-e632-4abc-b367-3d9b3bb5573b Windows 8: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8bfebcdc-fec7-4fec-ba14-1eeedcdd7be0&view=ffdb5e3a-e632-4abc-b367-3d9b3bb5573b Windows 10: https://windows.microsoft.com/en_us/windows10/details?id=deceaba2f%EF%BC%B4&hl=en

If you get this message, you can try running the program again from a different location or by unblocking the program using a software application.

In this case, you have to go to the Downloads folder and manually right-click on the package file and choose Open.

You will be asked for your Administrator password, but you should be able to install the package at this point. If not, go to System Preferences and then Security and Privacy. At the bottom, you’ll see that the app was blocked but you can click Open Anyway to run it.

Once the package has been installed, you’ll see a message stating that the install was successful. Click the Close button and let’s now open HandBrake.

Configuring HandBrake

This will disable libdvdnav, which is a library used by the DVD reading software.

To rip a DVD on your Mac, you will need: -An OS X computer -A DVD player -The latest version of HandBrake (available for free here: https://handbrake.fr/download) -The DVD you want to rip Step 1: Open the HandBrake application and click on the “Open File” button. Step 3 – Install libdvdcss & Configure HandBrake – Windows

Copy the libdvdcss.dll file to the HandBrake directory on your computer. First, open one explorer window that points to your Downloads folder or whichever folder has the DLL file. Next, open another explorer window that points to C:\Program Files\HandBrake or C:\Program Files(x86)\HandBrake, depending on which version of HandBrake was installed.

The (x86) path is for the 32-bit version of HandBrake and the other is for the 64-bit version. HandBrake will only be installed in one of those paths, not both. Now just drag and drop the DLL file into that folder. Note that you don’t have to rename the file by removing the -2 at the end of the file name. That was required in older versions of HandBrake, but not anymore.

If you need Administrator privileges in order to copy the file to the HandBrake folder, you will need to click continue and it will work. Once you have the file copied or moved to the HandBrake folder, open HandBrake in Windows.

Disable LibDVDNav (libdvdread will be used instead) This will prevent the program from using the DVD navigation library, which may result in faster loading times. ..

In Windows, restart HandBrake and then move on to step 4 to actually start ripping DVDs. ..

Step 4 – Rip DVD in HandBrake

Now that we have the HandBrake program installed, we can rip a DVD. Insert the DVD into your drive and open HandBrake. Click on Activity Log to open the log window. ..

The DVD option at the bottom of the source screen will automatically start scanning the DVD and then load up all the title and chapter information. If for some reason you get an error and nothing loads, you might have to close HandBrake and open it again, but this time right-click on the desktop shortcut and choose Run as Administrator.

  • Encryption was able to be circumvented
  • You are good to go

If you’re having trouble decrypting DVDs with HandBrake, you may need to delete the libdvdcss-2.dll file and try to copy it again. Make sure to close HandBrake first and right-click on the shortcut and choose Run as Administrator when opening it back up after copying the file.

This tutorial should be easy enough for anyone to follow. It does take a few steps, but nothing is too complicated. You may luck with different depending on the DVD drive you have and the type of DVD encryption you have to bypass. If you have any questions, feel free to comment. Enjoy! ..
