Since Windows 7 and Windows 8 were released, Microsoft has hidden the quick launch toolbar by default. You can enable it by going to the Control Panel and clicking on the “Quick Launch” tab. In Windows XP and Vista, you can enable it by going to the Start menu and clicking on the “Quick Launch” button. In Windows 7 and Windows 8, you can enable it by going to Settings and clicking on the “Quick Launch” tab.

Windows XP Quick Launch Toolbar

If your Quick Launch toolbar is not showing at all, it may be because you have not set it to be displayed. To do so, open the properties of the Quick Launch toolbar and click on the “Display” tab. There, you’ll need to set the “Quick Launch” button to be visible.

If you right click on the Quick Launch button, you’ll get a menu with the following options:

  • Show Desktop: This option will show the desktop as it would be if you had right clicked on the Start button or on an application window and clicked Toolbars. This is the default setting.
  • Hide Desktop: This option will hide the desktop.

If Quick Launch is not checked, make sure to check it. You should now see that the section to the right of the Start Button has a few icons. You can hover over the icons if there are already some there. There is always an icon for the shortcut to desktop as shown here: ..

To add a program to the Quick Launch bar, simply drag the icon from your desktop or from the Start menu onto the toolbar and you’ll see the position becomes a solid black line.

I was dragging Notepad from my Start menu to the toolbar and you can see the black vertical line between the other icons already there. Simply drop it and it’ll fit itself into that position.

You may see that your icons are not fitting on the taskbar and that there is a » at the right end of the toolbar. To extend the toolbar, you need to unlock the taskbar first. Right click on the taskbar and you’ll see that “Lock the Taskbar” is checked. If so, click on it to uncheck it.

You can drag the handles to enlarge the toolbar to your desired size.

To lock the taskbar, simply right-click on it and choose “Lock the Taskbar.”

The Shell command can be used to toggle the desktop. The IconFile and Taskbar commands can be used to change the icons on the taskbar.

Save the file as Show Desktop.scf on your desktop.

To get back to your Quick Launch toolbar, just drag the icon from wherever you saved it back onto the toolbar. ..

Quick Launch Toolbar in Windows 7 and Windows 8

Now let’s talk about how these new Windows 8 and Windows 7 features work. The first thing you’ll notice is that the taskbar has been moved to the top of the screen. This is because you can now pin apps to the taskbar like shown below. The second thing you’ll notice is that there are two new buttons on the taskbar: one called “ pinned apps” and the other called “ pinned items.” This means that if you have an app pinned to the taskbar, it will be listed under either of these buttons. The third thing you’ll notice is that there are now three tabs on the taskbar: one for applications, one for files, and one for settings. This means that if you have a lot of apps open, you can easily access them all by clicking on one of these tabs.

Windows 7 users can enable the quick launch toolbar by following these steps:

  1. Open the Start menu and click on the All Programs menu.

  2. Click on Accessories and then on System Tools.

  3. Click on the Quick Launch toolbar button to open its properties window.

  4. In the General tab, under Location, click on the drop-down list next to Show in list and select Always show this item at the top of the Start menu (or Show in folder windows if you want it to show only in folder windows). If you want to disable the quick launch toolbar, just change its location to Hidden or Disabled in step 4 above. ..

  5. Type “Notepad” into the text field and click on the OK button.

  6. Right-click on the Notepad toolbar and select New Tab.

  7. Type “TextEdit” into the text field and click on the OK button.

  8. Right-click on the TextEdit toolbar and select New Tab.

  9. Type “Notepad++” into the text field and click on the OK button.

  10. In the new Folder, select the file named “MyFile.txt”

  11. Click on OK to close the dialog and save the changes.

The Quick Launch bar is a new feature in Windows 10 that lets you quickly access your most commonly used tools and features.

  1. To remove the Quick Launch icon from the taskbar, you need to right-click on the taskbar and uncheck the Lock the Taskbar option. Once the taskbar is unlocked, you can right-click on Quick Launch and uncheck the Show Text and Show Title options. ..

You can now expand the toolbar by clicking and dragging the little handle on the left. All the icons will be small, but you can make them bigger by right-clicking on the handle and choosing Large Icons from the View option.

The Quick Launch toolbar is a great addition to Windows 7 and 8 because it brings you right to the desktop and the other button is basically like pressing ALT + TAB on the keyboard, except it’s better because it uses a cool 3D effect rather than just showing thumbnails in the grid.

You can perform this same procedure on Windows 8.1 and it works fine, I tested it. I’m not sure about Windows 8 because the taskbar along the bottom wasn’t introduced back until Windows 8.1. If you have Windows 8, you should probably upgrade to 8.1 anyway. If you have any issues, let us know in the comments. Enjoy!
