Some programs ask you if you want the option added to your context menu while others do not. Now granted, I probably said yes a couple of times, thinking how useful it would be to have that in my right-click menu, but there are still many I never use! ..

If you want to remove applications from the right-click context menu on files, folders, and the desktop, you can do it yourself with a little bit of registry hacking. If you don’t want to bother with the registry, check out my previous post on freeware utilities that can help you edit the context menu.

The ContextMenuHandlers folders are applications that show up when you right click on a file in Windows. You can either delete the folder to remove the option or simply disable the folder, which is better in case you want to bring it back later on.

To disable an application, open the folder in the left pane and right-click on the key value in the right pane. Choose “Modify.” ..

If you right-click on a file and choose “refresh,” the program will be gone from the context menu if it is not already. If the minus sign option is not working, you can delete the entire key for that particular program by right-clicking and choosing Delete.

The desktop in Windows has a different context menu location in the registry. Luckily, it shares the same structure as we have shown above, so you won’t have any trouble figuring out how to remove items.

You can right-click on the shell key and choose New – Key. Name the key whatever you want as that will appear in the context menu. In my example, I named my key Paint.

Windows 10: To change the context menu in Windows 10, open the Start screen and type regedit. This will open the Registry Editor. In the Registry Editor, you will see a number of folders and files. The most important folder is called “Registry”. In this folder, you will find a number of files called “Keyboard Shortcuts”. To change the context menu for a specific program, you need to find and open one of these files. For example, if you want to change the context menu for Microsoft Word, you would open the Keyboard Shortcuts file for Microsoft Word and then change the “Open with” value to “Notepad”.
