If you are a Windows user, you need to change your account name, computer name, account picture or computer password. In this article, I’ll show you how to complete all of these tasks on Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. To change your account name on Windows 7 and 8.1:
- Open the Start screen and type “netstat” into the search bar. This will show you a list of all network connections in your system.
- In the list of network connections, click on the “Link” button next to the account name that you want to change (e.g., “My Computer”). This will open a new window with information about that connection (e.g., its status, type of connection, etc.).
- In the window that opens, click on the “Change Name” button (it looks like a check mark). This will open a dialog box with information about changing your account name (e.g., your new name).
- Type in the new name into the text field at the top of the dialog box and click on OK (or press ENTER). The account name change process will start automatically and should take about 10 minutes to complete; if it takes longer than that, please call Microsoft support at 1-800-Microsoft-support (or go online at www.microsoftonlinehelp.com). Windows 10
In Windows 10 and 8.1, you can have a Microsoft account and/or a local computer account. The procedure for changing your picture or password is the same for either type of account, but not for changing your account name. If you have a local account, you can change the user name locally, but if you are logging in using your Microsoft account, you have to change it online.
Change User Name
To change the account name for a local account on your computer, click on Start and type in User Accounts. Now go ahead and click on the Change your account name link.
In Settings, click on Accounts and then click on Change Account Name.
On the Microsoft Account webpage, you can sign in and change your name.
Change Account Picture
To change the account picture in Windows 10, follow these steps:
- Click on Start, Settings and then Accounts. If you scroll down a bit below the name of your account, you’ll see a section called Your picture. Click the Browse button to choose a different picture.
You can take a picture with your camera by clicking on the Camera button on your computer or laptop.
Change Account Password
If you don’t have an account, you can sign in to your computer by using the Windows 10 login screen.
Windows 10 offers a variety of ways to change your password, including through the Windows Password Options screen or by using a PIN. If you have a PIN setup in Windows 10, you can either change it or remove it on this screen.
Change Computer Name
In Windows 10, you can change the computer name by clicking on Start, then Settings, then System and then clicking on About.
Renaming your computer can help you keep track of your new name and make sure that you’re using the correct one for your computer.
Windows 8
To get to the Start screen, you need to use a different method. Windows 8 doesn’t have a fully functional Start button, so you need to use one of the methods listed below.
In Windows 10, you can open the Start Screen by clicking on the three lines in the top left corner of the screen. In Windows 8, you have to click on Start, which opens the Start Screen and then start typing PC Settings.
To change the user name, password and account picture on your Microsoft account:
- Click on Accounts and then Your Account to change the Microsoft account username and to change the Account picture.
- Type in a new username or password if you have one already.
- Click on Change Password to confirm your new password and to set a new expiration date for your old password.
If you are using a local account, you can change the account name the same way as Windows 10 via the Control Panel. Click on the Start button and type in User Accounts. To change the account password or PIN in Windows 8, open PC Settings, click on Accounts and then Sign-in options, just like in Windows 10.

Windows 7
Change account name, password and picture
Windows 7 makes it easy to change everything in one place. Just click on Start and type in User Accounts to bring up the Control Panel dialog.
To change the computer password in Windows 7, go to the Control Panel and click on System. You’ll see a Change settings link at the bottom next to Computer password. ..
This will bring up a dialog box where you will have to click on the Change button. After this, you can type in the new name for the computer.
